Newsletter 12
May 2005
Dear Reader,

Hereby we welcome especially our new newsletter subscribers.
In April and May a lot has happened behind the screens at Book2CD.

Also we were in ”front of the screen” at the N.G.V. Apeldoorn to give a presentation. It was nice to be able to answer specific questions and we are always happy with tips people give us.

An instructional movie has been made for the CD-ROM "Apeldoorn in de Tweede Wereldoorlog": how to work and search with and in PDF documents. This instruction is applicable on all PDF documents. You can view this instruction by looking at # 46234 on our website www.boek2cd.com or by clicking here: http://www.digihouse.nl/bod/kroniek.html.

Many well known and unknown Book2CD fans borrow us their books.
We are very happy with this. These unique books will be available to the public this way.

A good example is: "Amsterdamse straatnamen Geschiedkundig verklaard" (1913). This work contains an alphabetical list of Amsterdam street names with 7 street maps in color, one of which is a historical survey map (14th – 19th century). The author gives historical details of each street name and a reference to the map in the back of the book. Details are often very locally oriented, for example the Dubbelworststeeg (Dubbelworst alley) has been named after an occupant of the house on the corner of that alley. Often the date of the council decision on the name assignment is being named. You can order the CD-ROM via the website, order number is 46258.

Another example is a series of old school books, particularly in the area of geography of the Netherlands and the Dutch Indies. They have been collected on 6 CD-ROM’s (numbers 46251 - 46256). Those that borrowed us their books: Thank you very much!

An observant user of the CD-ROM “De Tegenwoordige Staat van Gelderland” (number 46025) notified us that some illustrations were missing. These turned out to be missing in the original as well. With the help of an Archive we were able to locate another copy of this book with all the illustrations complete. The missing ones have been scanned by now. Buyers of this CD-ROM will receive an updated version of us.

In case you have purchased your CD-ROM through a retailer, your address data are not known by us. You can then receive your update through your retailer. For the lovers of family Coat of arms we have two new titles:

-Number 46248 Handboek der wapenkunde by J.B. Rietstap, written in 1875. A critically written handbook about heraldry, with the purpose to promote heraldry in the Netherlands. The author gives a re-translation of most terms being used, because the existing ones were translated so badly. After a short historical overview, a description of the coats of arms, adornments and illustrations follows. In the back of the book you can find a list of the “thriving Dutch nobility” and 4 lithographic illustrations.

-With the number 46249: Heraldiek by Jan H. Junius. An extraordinary complete book about Heraldry. The author outlines up front what the basis of this science is, among others based on Dutch 13th century literature. The middle part of the book consists of a detailed description of the coat of arms and their adornments. The third part is an alphabetical glossary with many search-words, also the French words are being translated. The book contains 521 illustrations which makes it very a readable whole. A very special acquisition!

In the “Year of the Castle” we publish the two part CD-ROM’s by Weber: Geldersche Kasteelen (46259). An overview of a selection of Castles in Gelderland, illustrated with photographs and drawings. Most of the described castles are 17th and 18th century castles that were “remodeled” into manors. The description emphasizes the historical data, complemented with antiquarian and genealogical information. This way one gets a good overview of the inhabitants of these castles. Also the author pays a lot of attention to the connections between many of those castles and the House of Orange. Printed in 1906.

This month’s offer is: ”Geschiedenis der Wereld” (History of the world) (order number 45915). Written by H.J. Werner and translated from German by B. ter Haar. Part one deals with the political developments around the French Revolution in particular, especially the cause of it and the first years after the revolution, until the coronation of Napoleon in 1830. Part two deals the later years of Napoleon and the period until the July revolution in 1830. Part three deals with the period 1830 till the coronation of Napoleon the 3rd in 1852 and also pays attention to the development of the Arts, Science and Economy. All parts only describe European history. Price, normally 30 dollars, this month’s offer is $15.00.

Within a few weeks we hope to launch our new website with our new logo! After that we will have three offers each month, of which we will replace one every month. The more reason to bookmark Book2CD’s URL and have a regular look!

We wish you lot’s of reading pleasure.
