Newsletter 11
April 2005
The Week of the Book with the theme "History" is history again. Several books have been published ABOUT the history of our country. Book2CD has published some new CDROMs that ARE history. Further down in this newsletter I will mention a few.

An important fact in Book2CDs history is that our CDROMs are now also available at the J.Tent Bookstore, Operaplein 2 in Apeldoorn. This way our readers in Apeldoorn now have two options (the first one was Knowledge Centre "De Verdieping" at CODA) to save on shipping costs.

The theme of the historical cafe in CODA at april 7 (starts at 5.30 pm) is Liberation day. Some new books will be presented to mayor Fred de Graaf. Besides that we will publish the "Apeldoornse Oorlogskroniek", a co-production between Book2CD and CODA on CDROM. This CDROM contains more information and more photos then the "paper" version. The presentation will take place in the CODA-cafe and is open to all for free. You are hereby cordially invited to be present. You will also be able to view the CDROM on a screen. The order number of the CDROM is 46234, but it will also be for sale in libraries and many bookstores for $27,50.

The Artfair Tefaf, which was held a while ago in Maastricht, had a remarkable "lost and found" object. While clearing up, an etching was discovered of which was suspected it was by Rembrandt van Rijn, with a probable value of 80.000 Euro. A dealer had "forgotten" it. The etching turned out to be made by Dürer and "only" worth 20.000 Euro. If you are interested in Dürer and want to know who he was and to see a part of his work we can recommend our CDROM. It contains many illustrations which you can eventually print and frame. The price of this CDROM is only $12,50 (Catalogue number 46028).

Henk Lups wrote about the "Aardrijkskundig Woordenboek" by Van der Aa a nice article in "Ons Erfgoed". With his permission I hereby citate a part:

"At first one is inclined to say: what is the use of such an old dictionary? It is an inventory of Dutch councils, cities, villages and especially hamlets. It is a book with a wealth of background information about Dutch cultural history, infra-structure, nature, environment and sights-to-see. This book is sometimes usefull to genealogists. If one find ones ancestors, for instance born in "Bergen", this book teaches us Bergen is not only a village and (former?) council in the province of Limburg, but also a hamlet in Noord Brabant and a village and former manor and council in Noord Holland. The town of "Buren" can be found in Gelderland but also on the island Ameland. There is an "Oosthuizen" in Noord Holland NW of Edam and there was a village Oosthuizen on the north side of Ameland. The inhabitants of this village were evacuated because of floods and moved to the hamlet of Buren.

Sometimes one finds names of persons who are supposed to have lived in a certain town, but of which one cannot find a sign in any of the church records. Usually those persons did not belong to the Reformed (state) church. The following examples illustrate this. In Mijdrecht the 20 Lutherans that lived there, belonged to the council of Weesp and the Roman catholics belonged to the state of Nederhorst den Berg. In Oosterwolde for example lived a few Baptists, that were counted among the council of Lippenhuizen, the 7 Roman Catholics that lived there, were counted among the state of Venhuizen. Schiedam had a united Flemish and Waterlandse Baptist parish, that perished in the middle of the eighteenth century. The remaining Baptists belonged to the same parish as the one in Rotterdam. This also included one or two Remonstrants. Further there were 5200 Roman Catholics. An overview of all the parish priests is given. While the 5th was in charge, the "Jansenist" separation took place. The "Israelites" belonged to the Ring-Synagogue of Rotterdam and had a by-church in Schiedam. When we glance through the rest of the book we see that for example in Zuidbroek the Baptists, the Evangelist Lutherans and the Roman Catholics belonged to the Sappemeer church and the Israelities belonged to Hoogezand. The "Aardrijkskundig Woordenboek" does not only give answers about places and religions, it also accounts for a lot of people"

We express our thanks to Henk Lups for this clarification. Book2CD has the "Beknopt Aardrijkskundig Woordenboek" by Van der AA in catalogue with the number 45838 for $19,95. The extended dictionary by Van der Aa in 13 volumes is number 45888 for the price of $39,00.
